Our research team reviewed a multitude of mens shampoo products and selected only the top best for you to try out now!

Dandruff and scalp irritation impact the daily lives of 50% of the population world wide – that’s upwards of 146 million sufferers! The market offers endless solutions for females – but what about us men? Why continue to put up with an itchy, dry scalp if there are products specifically designed for us that relieve, repair and restore our scalps, and boost our confidence with a flake-free appearance.

To decide which shampoos are the best for male scalp care, our team conducted extensive research and analysis to filter the top options from the hundreds available on the market right now.

Our team of testers performed an in-depth evaluation of the chosen product’s technology, production methods (such as animal testing, synthetic fragrances and the use of unwanted ingredients such as parabens), prices, ingredients and user results.

Here are the 5 best mens shampoo products on the market:

#1 Mayson

Mayson Purify & Heal

Overall Rating (4.9)
5/5

Mayson’s Purify and Heal Shampoo is the best product for men experiencing dandruff and irritation. The website advises the blend of high concentration Salicylic Acid, alongside Chamomile and Calendula, aims to remove stubborn flakes and relieve itchiness without compromising moisture levels. We can confirm these ingredients are well known to achieve such outcomes.

While highly effective at removing dandruff and reducing itchy discomfort, testers found the active ingredients to work in a gentle, non-aggressive manner to exfoliate, clean and calm their scalp. It is also important to note that Mayson products are free of parabens, phthalates and synthetic fragrances.

After 30 days of use, our team saw a significant reduction in dandruff and felt notably less discomfort and itchiness throughout their day. We were impressed to find that Mayson sympathises with consumers when it comes to spending money on trying a new product, particularly after many consumers are left disappointed after trying multiple options. Mayson offers a 60 day money-back guarantee which allows over double the time to try the product, than it takes to see the results.

This product lives up to its claims with superior ingredients and proven results verified by external 3rd party labs.

#2 Hairstory

Hairstory New Wash

Overall Rating (4.5)
4.5/5

Hairstory claims to be a brand that focuses on purposeful and intentional products, leaving no room for the unnecessary. Their product line was born out of a hair studio in Manhattan with hopes to make hair care both more simple and more natural. This begins to explain why they use various oils in their shampoo instead of detergent. Despite this, the product we’re about to review contains both Alcohols and Sulphates.

The £44.00 Hairstory New Wash Original is a cleansing Shampoo that cleanses hair with oils as opposed to hair-stripping and damaging detergents. Hairstory explain that by stripping our hair with other brands of shampoo, our Scalps are encouraged to overcompensate and produce more oil. Conversely, the New Wash Original Shampoo intends to cleanse the hair with oils such as Peppermint and Sunflower.

While reviewing this product we did find many happy users, even monthly subscribers, stating that this shampoo cleaned and volumised their hair without creating frizz. Unfortunately, there are also a number of negative reviews of some facing hair-loss and thinning, and many experiencing greasiness.

Hairstory also have a helpful subscription service so that you don’t have to re-order every time you run out of product. Just be mindful that this is an option as it seems many people had signed up to this without even realising they had done so.

#3 Aēsop

Aēsop Equalising Shampoo

Overall Rating (4.3)
4.3/5

Aesop was founded in Melbourne in 1987 and now deliver their products to most corners of the globe. They are a brand that specialise in hair, skin and beauty products designed around efficacy and sensory pleasure. With that in mind, we can expect that these products will be highly fragranced. While this may be a sensorily pleasant addition, fragrances may bring with them allergies or skin irritation and often take away from active ingredient delivery.

The Aesop Equalising Shampoo is stocked globally and averages at about £33.00 per 500ml bottle. There is also a promise of free delivery throughout the UK for orders over £25. Bonus! It is designed specifically for both men and women to target excess oil and dirt as these may be causes of an itchy scalp. Aesop recommend use of their equalising Shampoo 3-5 times a week paired with a conditioner.

While reviewing this product, many testers were pleased with achieving less oily feeling hair. However, these happy consumers all had a naturally oily scalp and hair to start with. This leaves us uncertain to how well the product would work for those that have naturally dry hair or a flaky scalp. Considering the product was found to be drying on those with oily scalps, this leaves concern for how dry it may make already dehydrated and brittle hair.

Understanding that scalp conditions arise not just from an over-production of oil is crucial here, in order not to make dry, flaky or itchy scalp issues worse.

#4 Aveda Men

Aveda Men Pure-Formance

Overall Rating (4.0)
4/5

Next, we have Aveda Men Pure-Formance Shampoo. A delicate vegan shampoo that protects the scalp from any pollutants and environmental stressors while also conditioning and moisturizing the hair. It is formulated with Aveda’s pure-fume blend of spearmint, vetiver, lavender, and other pure flower and plant essences for an addictive scent that lingers on the hair. This Shampoo comes in 300ml (£21.50) and 1 Litre (£49.50), and claims to be best paired with Aveda Men Pure-Formance Conditioner.

While we were impressed that it is made out of vegan products. We were less pleased with the results, according to our testers residues were left on the scalp and hair became oily very soon after washing.

#5 Oribe

Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo

Overall Rating (3.8)
3.8/5

Oribe’s Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo has been designed to cleanse hair, bring it back to full strength and help remove impurities. Made with argan, maracuja and cypress extracts, it claims to balance the hair and scalp in order to fortify and strengthen both. This shampoo comes with a hefty price of £50.00 for a 250 ml bottle and £139.00 for a 1 Litre bottle.

Unfortunately, our testers were not impressed with the results that they got. The shampoo leaves the hair smelling great after use, but also leaves it greasy and tangled at the end of the day. A number of our testers also commented that they needed to use more than the usual amount for it to lather smoothly, and didn’t get extraordinary results. This, alongside a high price tag and mixed consumer reviews, makes this particular product difficult to recommend.
