Key Ingredients

This serum is made of 0.2% retinol, a derivative from vitamin A that encourages skin cells to regenerate fast and hydrating ingredients like glycerine which makes skin soft and plump while minimising the effects of acne scars left behind by hyperpigmentation.

L’Oreal worked on this serum for 22 years to create a product that is effective and safe. First, they created the retinol stabilization technology which protects it from air and sun damage so its ingredients are more potent when applied onto skin. Second, L’Oreal enlisted an independent international board of dermatologists to test their formula making sure there were no harmful additives or fragrances in the serum as well as being silicone-free and paraben-free.

Customer Feedback

The reviews on their website show that L’Oréal’s Retinol Night Serum is rated highly among their customers:

L’Oreal: Reviewed 94 times and has an overall rating of 4.2.
Amazon: Reviewed 6,905 times and has an average rating of 4.5.

Despite the promising reviews, some mentioned that it has made their skin very dry and flaky. Other users had been using retinol products before but found this to be too strong for them because of its third ingredient: alcohol. A handful of people experienced a burning sensation when using this serum, so they stopped usage immediately after experiencing these side effects. The smell is also very strong as one customer described it as “strongly scented” where the scent lingers on the face for quite some time following application.

Pricing

L’Oreal’s Pure Retinol Night Serum is only $29 and provides anti-aging benefits that can make your skin look brighter, smoother, and more evenly toned.

So what's our verdict?

Retinol products are often scary and complicated to use for beginners, but L’Oreal’s Pure Retinol Night Serum was so easy to use and can easily be added to anyone’s skincare routine. You will however experience purging, which is common at first, but after some time your skin will truly thank you.

Retinol requires consistency, so if you are still on the look for other retinol products, skin skin experts such as SKNDOCTOR’s Dr Ewoma Ukeleghe recommend La Roche-Posay 0.3% Retinol + Vitamin B3 Serum, £38. This contains 0.3.% retinol, which is a little higher but still gentle. The addition of vitamin B3 boosts hydration and moisture in the skin. Also try skinSense Retinol Serum 0.3%, £39. It was created by skincare expert Abi Cleeve, who believes in a very slow and gentle approach when it comes to retinol products. R29 rates Typology’s Fine Lines & Wrinkles Serum 0.3% Retinol, £15.30, for combating signs of ageing, too.
